Tutoring Monday!

Perhaps our final tutoring experience is this Monday at 10.30. If for any reason *you are planning to arrive late,* please arrive by 1025.

The assignment is below.

English 101/Professor Meyer
Paper #3: Issues in Labor Research Paper
Due Dates:    Annotated Bibliography, Monday, May 11th
Rough Draft, Peer Edit Workshop, Wednesday, May 20th
                        Final Draft, Wednesday, May 27th

Essay Topic: Your third paper builds off of the work we did in paper #2, but this time you have some additional choice. You will choose a profession you are interested in pursuing (police work, education, nursing, physical therapist, etc.), research that profession, and write a paper describing that career and analyzing one or two of its significant labor issues. This is a way to inform yourself about both the possibilities of your potential future career, but also the potential hazards. Like paper #2, you should look into what kind of pay and benefits workers do or do not receive, possibilities for promotion and advancement, and how workers in this industry are exploited, what dangers they may face of the job, groups traditionally discriminated against, etc. You might also look into issues we have not yet covered, such as hiring practices, formal training, etc. This will culminate in an essay that uses your research to put forth an analysis of that profession and the related labor practices and that supports your analysis with the sources you have found.
Essay Goal: This assignment will allow you to practice research skills, the incorporation of secondary sources, correct citation, and other skills useful to future college writing assignments. Your final product will showcase your ability to develop your own argument, find reliable and accurate sources for that argument, select effective and useful evidence from those sources, and to incorporate the writing skills we have practiced all semester.
Different Parts of the Essay Assignment:
Background Information: You essay should include relevant information about your job and its overall career path. You should describe your interests and important facts about the job.

Labor Issues: You will need to discuss the potential labor issues related to your career path. These will be found during the research process and where you will use much of your secondary sources.

Argument: Because this paper has multiple parts, your thesis may not be located early on in the paper. But as you specifically discuss the labor issues of your career, you should express a clear opinion about the consequences of those issues, ways they can be changed, how they affect you, etc.

Summary, paraphrase, and quotation: This material will come from the readings you discuss and should be accurate, directly related to your essay topic and thesis, and formatted correctly.
MLA Format: Your paper title, use of sources, and “Works Cited” page must all be in MLA format. We will discuss and practice this in class.  The library also has online guides and assistance on MLA format here:  http://library.laguardia.edu/research/cite
Secondary Sources and Analysis: Your paper will need to include three or more secondary sources from different genres (book, newspaper, magazine, journal, etc.) that meet the expectations we will discuss in class. These sources should relate directly and thoughtfully to your topic and thesis and will need to be incorporated into your essay in correct MLA format (which we will practice in class).  To help you with this, you will submit an “annotated bibliography” on Monday, May 11th. Look at the assignment sheet for expectations.

Formal Expectations:
§  4-5 pages (800+ words)
§  Typed, double spaced, 12pt font
§  Use of three or more unique sources as part of your research
§  All work (first and final drafts, and the source analysis paper) must be on time or will be graded down

§  Paper in MLA format, including a correctly formatted Works Cited page (doesn’t count towards page expectations)
